According to a statement issued by the EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren, Malik was arrested on May 31, 2021, by officers of the Nigeria Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Alagbon, Lagos, and turned over to the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution.
The statement read in part, “Investigation revealed that he acts as a middleman, who connects Internet fraudsters around the globe with pickers, and receives some percentage on every successful transaction from the proceeds of unlawful activities.”
The father of the suspect was also arrested when he claimed ownership of an SUV from Range Rover without proof of ownership.
“During investigation, his father, Isa Bakare, appeared at the commission, claiming ownership of a Range Rover SUV estimated at about N46m, which was recovered from his son. He, however, could not give a satisfactory account of how he was able to procure the vehicle.”
The statement added that the suspects would soon be charged.
In other news, Former Presidential Aide, Reno Omokri called for the arrest of Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami for trading Bitcoin.
He has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to effect his arrest.
This comes after a screenshot shared by Malami showed that he uses a cryptocurrency, LAtoken to trade bitcoin.
Additionally, it was gathered that he uses VPN to access the ban social media platform.
In reaction, Reno Omokri asked the EFCC to quickly arrest Malami in series of tweets;
“If the Chief Law Enforcer of the Buhari government is himself trading in Bitcoin, as can be clearly seen by the LAToken icon on the screenshot he released showing he has deactivated his Twitter account, then he must apologise and step down”
“Attached is prima facie proof Buhari’s AGF, Malami, trades in #Bitcoin. Why else would he have a #Cryptocurrency app @latokens) on his phone? This is a violation of the law and he must be investigated and prosecuted. Highly hypocritical”
“My counsel to Nigerians is continue trading #Bitcoin and use a VPN. If Buhari’s Attorney General, Malami, who is meant to enforce the ban on #Crypto, is himself trading in it, then @officialEFCC should arrest him before they arrest you.”
